    Oh fuck.

Ah well, to cheer me up from the general Borisness of it all, off to Gamecamp tomorrow (well, later today really).

Although Boris will still be mayor.

    Fuckbeans!

  • They don’t make ads like they used to, Pt II

They don’t make ads like they used to - but what if they did?

    Video Games benefit your children!

Mr Nokia’s Patent Mobile Telephonic Communicator & Typographic Messenger!

The challenge to photoshop enthusiasts was to take modern products and advertise them in a vintage way, or take vintage products and advertise them in a modern way - check out the full set for more, including Marilyn Monroe promoting Philips , Tivo and the Ford Mustang.

    Genius.

  • Taking care of your beaver

The ever-wonderful Copyranter brought this Australian TV ad for Kotex to my attention (or rather my boss Geoff said there was this fab thing on copyranter today and had I seen it yet?):

Finally we have a sanpro ad which actually references the fact that it’s do with women’s bits, in a delightfully amusing way - never mind singing dogs, this has a sunbathing beaver!

We all know the cliche of the ad with the girl in tight lycra, rollerblading through fountains, followed by a demonstration of absorbancy using the ubiquitous bright blue liquid. Which of course give a completely representative picture of the wonderful world of menstruation and sanitary products.

So it warmed my heart to see that not only was Australia taking care of its beavers, but that France has actually acknowledged that periods involve bleeding!

Lest we forget what a staggering leap this is, let’s just take a walk down memory lane….

Courtney Cox broke the mould when she was the first person to actually say ‘period’ on TV!

    Whooooooaaaaaaaaaaah Bodyfoooooooorm!

    Periods are great!!

Oh no, it’s actually a tampon, silly me, I thought it was a sweet!

    Tampax Compak Exam

    Golly, aren’t periods FUN!

    Fuck Grapefruit

Been a wee bit hectic on the old work front (new client yay! 118 118, very interesting brand to work on, big upcoming campaign so busy busy…plus lotsa COI business running to the same financial year, so year planning for all the different accounts I work on basically at the same time, fun fun fun!) hence sorely neglected blogging duties.

Normal service should hopefully resume soon, however I couldn’t resist today’s post at the ever glorious xkcd - whilst I’m sure every planner has at one time or another rolled out the good old correspondence map / 4-way axis / quadrant / whatever you choose to call it, today’s xkcd puts any of my previous efforts at brand mapping to shame, with such pure simplicity and honesty.

    Fuck grapefruit indeed.

PS: Also fuck coconuts. Hover and you’ll see.

    Candyfab

Imagine a spirograph crossed with a candy floss machine crossed with a printer. Or put it another way - remember the replicator from Star Trek which would beam up a fabulously tasty concoction out of this air?

Wouldn’t it be cool if that were real?

Well, the fabulously named Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories have done just that with their latest production CandyFab (aka The Evil Mad Scientist 3D Fabricator)

3D printers aren’t totally new. But they are extremely pricey. The Z Corp Z450 will set you back a cool $40,000. But Candyfab was first built using three sacks of granulated sugar, an aquarium pump, a car jack and some recycled printer parts. And it only bloody works.

It’s totally open source - so you can make one at home. In fact, since people have been making their own at home, printing has been refined from 5 ppi to 20 ppi. Not bad for something home-grown and made using odds and ends on the cheap.

Yet another example of innovation at its best when driven by the minds of many rather than the minds of the few. (And apparently my interest in geeky things to do with printers!)

See the whole process in its full glory at Flickr

You have to love the quintessential nerd - even better than playing guitar hero with Slash, in case you haven’t seen it, featuring (amongst others), rapping with Jay-Z, working out with Matthew McConaughey, and auditioning for Steven Spielberg, check out Bill Gates figuring out what he’ll do with his post-Microsoft life…
